Extracurricular Activities in School

Extracurricular activities are a controversial subject among many school districts around the United States. Many believe that education and funding are more important matters than clubs and sports. Extracurricular activities should not be eliminated throughout school districts due to funding.
School is important. Everyone knows this and no one can truly argue against it. Wake up, go to school, come home and repeat. But why do people do this? Why do we attend school everyday? Most would say learning, of course. That would be the most common, expected answer. However, learning what? We don’t attend school every single day just to learn your basic subjects. School is so much more than that. It teaches you the fundamentals of life. Life isn’t all about a grade point average, and school shouldn’t be either.
Extracurricular activities are the basis for social learning. Social learning is just as, if not more, important than math and science. Being on a football team teaches kids to play fare and work together. Two very important skills needed for any type of job or profession. The cheerleading squad teaches commitment and determination. Teams and clubs give children a sense of family and self-worth. No matter how smart you are, basic people skills can strongly influence a potential employer’s decision. Employers would rather hire someone comfortable in front of a crowd, as apposed to someone who did well on an exam.
While money is an issue throughout schools nationwide, it should not stand in the way of other opportunities. Schools can use extracurricular activities to their advantage and actually earn money. Fundraising is very popular among clubs and teams. Competition sparks trophies and money. The schools wouldn’t cut math due to funding. Why would they cut choir? Schools and teachers insist of trying new things and becoming the best person that you can possibly be. But how is that achievable when the things they love are taken away because they are deemed “unimportant”?
Extracurricular activities may be controversial, but not overlooked. School isn’t just about tests and exams. Students nationwide should be able to learn how to work well with others, and cooperate well in a crowd. When money is an issue, clubs and sports come in handy. Extracurricular activities should not be eliminated throughout school districts due to funding.
