Extended Definition
“Stupid is as stupid does” is a phrase that means one’s knowledge or lack of knowledge alone does not make him or her smart or stupid. One is simply not stupid because he cannot remember what he learned in school. Therefore, one is also not smart because he can remember what he learned in school. The title of “smart” or “stupid” is earned based on a person’s characteristics. These characteristics, in order of importance, include common sense, actions, and acquired knowledge. Possessing one or more of these attributes is enough for one to be considered smart. The lack of one of these attributes, however, could also make one be considered stupid.

Common sense is the most important characteristic of the definition for “Stupid is as stupid does”. Bob did not make very good grades in school, but when his friends asked him to jump off of a bridge with them, he was smart enough to say no, because he used common sense. Bob made a very smart decision to not jump off of the bridge, so although he did not make very good grades at school, he represents the converse of the phrase “Stupid is as stupid does.”

Another characteristic of the definition for “Stupid is as stupid does” is one’s actions. For example, Joe could be the top of his class with an extremely high IQ, but if he jumps off of a bridge because all of his friends say they will do it, he is representing the phrase “Stupid is as stupid does” because he isn’t making smart actions. If Joe had told his friends no, he would have made a very smart decision that, along with his knowledge and common sense, would have made him seem like a very smart person.

The least important, although still valuable, characteristic of the definition for “Stupid is as stupid does” is acquired knowledge. For example, Sue did not always make the best decisions, but she could think her way out of any precarious situations.
