Take a moment to ponder the true reason humans act and react to difficult situations differently. Some people react to complex situations in a negative way, like using drugs, becoming violent or even withdrawing themselves from the rest of the world. Others seem to have the coping skills to handle these same situations in a more positive and productive manner. These people manage to face life’s rough times head-on and find a solution through patience, humility, and faith. Why such a drastic difference in behavior? Is it as simple as individual personality traits, which make us react in a negative or positive manner or is it a taught skill? I believe it is a combination of both. No matter if these are taught skills or if it is a part of our personality, any answers should be centered on individuality.

      All people need a little help in life with some form of guidance.   The Human Service profession is built on helping others in a variety of different ways. Whether someone may have a drug addiction or just needs some help sorting out some depression, maybe the drug addiction stems from a traumatic childhood, maybe someone has lost a job and needs some assistance finding a place to live and food to eat. Human Service professionals have the tools to help those in troubled times, get ahead.

      The goal of a Human Service professional is to help people meet their basic physical and emotional needs that they could not have been able to deal with alone. It is the belief of the Human Service profession that with support and encouragement that they can empower their clients by looking for each client’s individual strengths. As a person learns how to think in a positive and productive manner, they can confront and overcome difficult barriers that they face.
