Explain the ways in which you would establish ground rules with your learners, which underpin behaviour and respect for others
Students differ when it comes to behaviour and respect for others depending on their own life experiences and influences.
Therefor they need to know what you expect from them and what they can expect from you during their chosen course. They need to know where the boundaries lie and what will happen if they step over the boundaries.
This can be done during an individual or group introduction to the course and can be easily incorporated into icebreakers or other fun activities to ensure students are relaxed and likely to discuss expectations.
This should include all views ensuring that every student feels heard and included, ensuring respect is given to others. This form of inclusion when establishing ground rules underpins behaviour and demonstrates that as the teacher you are also approachable and understanding of their needs. The rules are important for the teacher/learner relationship to work well together towards their shared goal.
When discussing ground rules with learners it is important for the teacher to establish their own rules which reflect their commitment and knowledge to the subject they are teaching.
My own ground rules would include demonstrating my professionalism by always wear appropriate clothing and being fully prepared for lessons with enough hand outs for individuals or props for class demonstrations.
I would ensure that all classes are ready to start and if necessary promptly finish on time. For individual lessons I would plan following lessons to allow me to run over time... [continues]
