P1 explain theories of ageing.
In this assignment I will be explain 4 theories and link it to a scenario that was given by the teacher in class. Sociological/psychological theories;
* Disengagement theory
* Activity theory
Biological theories:
* Genetically programmed theory
* Disposable soma theory

* Disengagement theory
This theory Cumming and Henry in 1961 suggests that when Andy is to get older he will withdraw from the society in preparation for death and this could be because the society is becoming less likely to engage with and include older people. Therefore this could lead Andy to feel lonely and not wanted in society itself. Cumming and Henry argued that this was a consequence of people learning their limitations with age and making way for new generations of people to fill their roles. However, the study of aging and society, disengagement theory is controversial, and many people do not agree with it. Critics point out that often this disengagement is enforced, rather than voluntary; if the older adult needed to move to a care home, for example, they needs social circle, as their friends may not be able to visit, and may start to die, leaving them with fewer connections. However, if they didn’t need to move to a care home they may retire their job and then they may feel as though they can’t spend time with their ‘work friends’ because they has left and then they may start to feel lonely and loose their self-confidence which will cause their social circles to shrink as they start to pull away and be less actively involved, leaving the older adult to grow more and more fragile as their ages. * Activity theory

In 1963 Having Hurst argues that older people need to stay active and integrated in society so that the whole society functions well, he also argues that in order that older people have a positive attitude and well-being that they should refuse limitations place upon them for example, retirement.
