Vegetarian
During this research, I learned about being a vegetarian. First of all, I wanted to know
how many Americans are vegetarians. “In the survey, 3 percent of U.S. adults indicated they
never eat meat, poultry, and fish/seafood. They were classified as vegetarian. About one third of
vegetarians, or one percent of U.S. adults, also never eat dairy, eggs, and honey and, therefore,
were classified as vegan” (“How Many Vegetarians Are There?”). Then, I questioned why these
people become vegetarians. Some people just have simple reasons such as they don’t like meat
or feel like doing it. In contrast, others have personal reasons such as religious or health reasons.
Also, few people believe that it is wrong to eat animals or kill them, so these people don’t use or
buy any animal related products, including some clothing (“Vegetarianism In A Nutshell”).
Moreover, there are several different types of vegetarian. Vegetarians who don’t eat meat but do
eat dairy products and eggs are called lacto-ovo vegetarian. Ovo vegetarian don’t eat meat or
dairy products but do eat eggs. Vegans are who don’t eat any animal products including meat
products, milk, cheese, eggs, honey, or gelatin. (CYWH Staff at Children’s Hospital Boston).
While researching, I also found what nutrients or vitamins are needed while eating vegetarian
diets. Vegetarians have to make sure that they are getting enough nutrients and vitamins such as
calcium, zinc, iron, vitamin D, and vitamin B12. Especially, since vegetarians can’t get protein
from meat like others, they have to find substitutes for protein, like eggs, and eat different types
of foods, such as vegetables fruit and whole grain (“Becoming A Vegetarian”).
