Experiences from the Past: A Discourse on Niccolo Machiavelli’s Political Thought
A person has always an idea on how they want life to be. Usually, people want to have a “perfect life”, however, no one has and it is quite impossible. People tend to dream to have a perfect life with harmonious society, good government as well as good leaders, and good people around them. However, as what have said earlier there is no perfect life. Even though some people accepts the fact that there is no perfect in this world except for God, they still make it a point that there respective lives will be perfect in their own way. This is possible. People have different belief, wants, interest and so on. If a person has a perfect life and to others they think of it as an ordinary, it just shows that people have an own standard of having a perfect life. The modern political thinkers during their time have different standards on having a good society and good rulers. These modern political thinkers may be a part of the government or associated with the government officers or perhaps, just an ordinary citizen who has an interest on politics or affected on what is happening to his/her society. Moreover, these modern political thinkers have different perspectives on how they view life and their respective society. They have different plans or solutions on how they will make their society a better place to live. However, before they compose a plan or solutions, of course, they will first critic their co-modern political thinker on how they compose their ideal state and how they come up with their ideal ruler of the society. Usually, the critics of some modern political thinkers are negative in such a way that they think that a society really needs to have a new state. They will ensure that the plans or solutions they have will benefit everybody and will make the society a better place to live in. Perhaps, the first modern political thinker was Niccolo Machiavelli. The aim of this paper is to have a discourse on Niccolo Machiavelli’s life and what were his experiences during his time that shaped the way he thinks towards the government and to the society. Moreover, this paper will also discuss the books he wrote: The Prince and Discourses upon the First Ten Books of Titus Livy. Furthermore, this paper will discuss his ideal ruler, government and state. At the end of this paper, it will answer the questions: Is the state essential in mans existence? For what reason/s must the people organize the state and would people be happy living in a state? In addition, this paper will have a conclusion on Niccolo Machiavelli’s views and beliefs and about the discussion of this paper.
