I am going to show you how I am going to begin exercising daily in order to help prevent obesity by using the Health Belief Model. I believe that if I continue to eat the way I do on a regular basis and don’t engage in any physical activity it will lead to a chronic illness or an early death. I will show you how I plan to start and succeed in changing my inactive lifestyle to an active lifestyle. Okay, so many of you like me work, have kids, are extremely busy, and have little time. Sounds familiar? You may be asking yourself “why do you feel the need to exercise?” Well the answer is I am overweight and have a job that I sit at most of the day and am not moving around much at all. Sound familiar? Obesity is described as having a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or greater. How do you figure out your BMI? To calculate your BMI, multiply your weight by 703 and divide it by the square of your height measured in inches (BMI= (wt x 703)/ (Ht x Ht) = BMI. When I did this I was amazed, many people could have never have imagined they would be classified as obese but guess what? I am in the obese category. Being obese can do more than making us upset because we can’t fit into our clothes. It can increase our chance of having a chronic disease, it can make diseases like coronary artery disease worse, and it can even shorten our life span. Could I be susceptible to getting diabetes or high blood pressure? I sure can especially because my BMI is over 30 and I don’t exercise. There are many benefits of taking preventive action. Some include: increased energy, weight loss, better psychological health, decreased risk of chronic diseases, and many more. Now you may be thinking the same thing I was “how am I going to squeeze in exercising on a daily basis?” I feel like there is not enough time in the day already, you too right?
