Situation Analysis: The Chapters Lounge is a bar located in the Riverside Motor Inn. Chapters Lounge is a small and quaint bar, looking to expand their sales. The Riverside Motor Inn was built in 1975, has over 34 rooms and charges a rate of 55 dollars a night. It is located in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia, with a population of 7,500 people. Chapters Lounges offers a variety of alcoholic beverages, ranging from beer to liquor and also offers food. The primary customers are people over the age of 19 and passing tourists. The competitive advantage for Chapter Lounge is that they are a smaller bar and more convenient for people staying in the Riverside Motor Inn, as they don’t have to leave. By having a smaller bar, it creates a quieter and relaxing experience that the other bars don’t offer, as they are a lot larger. They made 66,700 dollars in sales last year as said by Ronald Veinot, the General Manager. Chapters Lounge wants to expand their sales and try and make 100,000 dollars in the year 2000.

SWOT: The company’s strengths are location, quiet rooms and once renovations are done, it will be a more upscale place. The company’s weaknesses are their old bartender left, having renovations and manager lacks experience. The company’s opportunities are expanding in Bridgewater, Lunenburg County and attracting more tourists. The company’s threats are Len’s Place, Chevy’s and Pirate’s Pub.

Problem Analysis: Chapters Lounge has many problems to deal with, but they have a few that could help the company dramatically. The first problems is that the owners invested in a new front entrance and are doing major renovations to Chapters. By them having these renovations, Chapters Lounge will have to be closed for almost two months. Another problem is Chapters Lounge charges more money for drinks than their competitors during happy hour. They charge an extra 25 cents for beer and extra 50 cents for liquor more than their competitors.

The contribution of $35, 867 can help attract more customers by advertising the lounge in Bridgewater, Lunenburg County, or Bridgewater trading area. The decrease in revenue in 1996 can be because of the departure of a long-time bartender named DJ or the new manager named Ronald. In exchange for DJ, Chapters Lounge gains Heidi who had six years of experiences at a different Lounge. One thing that we noticed right away was that the majority of people entering the restaurant came in pairs (typically, but not always, one male and one female.) All patrons are greeted by someone who opens the door for them. Upon entering they are then greeted by another person who asks them where they would like to be seated (smoking or non-smoking.) The typical wait to be seated during this time was about 1-2 minutes. Another…

The business I decided to research was a restaurant and bar in Antioch, Illinois. This bar was called, “The Dirty Rooster,” Jon Taffer was in charge of turning around this restaurant. Jon Taffer is the owner and chairman of a bar/nightclub consulting firm called Taffer Dynamics, Inc. Taffer is a bar and nightclub owner who has started, turned around, or owned over 800 businesses in his career that spans over three decades. The restaurant/bar that Taffer is rescuing on this certain episode of the show “Bar Rescue” is appealing to me because of the insanity that goes on during the show, this is one of my favorite episodes I have seen.…

A main issue is addressing the concerns older and current members might have in regards to the proposed changes; older membership may be already currently satisfied with the operations and facilities of the country club and see no reason to implement changes. They may see change as a threat or an inconvenience to ending the old way of conducting business rather than as an opportunity to increase socializing and family oriented entertainment. This concern actually addressed a deeper issue the country club was facing: the potential deterioration of the golfing and dining services they were supposedly specialized in. This was pointed out through the findings of the McMahon's study where there were major concerns about the speed of service, the professionalism of the wait staff and the variety of menu items for their dining facility, the 37th hole. Since, the dining portion of the country club is currently half of their entertainment program, any flaws within the dining experience will be detrimental for the country club, in the perception of not only attracting new members, but also maintaining their current members. Management should look into the operations of the wait staff and seek out strategies to increase a favorable outlook from the members in this dimension. Some questions management should pose to evaluate the effectiveness of the dining facility should be: are the servers properly trained to handle customer service related issues?; are the dining halls up to health standards and do they make the members feel comfortable?; etc. Some of these basic lines of questioning can lead to more effective evaluation to ensure the dining experience of the club is up to par. Questions dealing with the personalities of the servers and wait staff will also address the concerns of dwindling membership due to the…

The Medical Center is starting a new initiative dedicated to the prevention of pressure ulcers in acute care facilities. Hospital-acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs) are a national concern due to increased morbidity, climbing treatment cost, and decreased reimbursements. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) considers pressure ulcers to be preventable. Hospitals are already facing low reimbursements and penalties from Medicare related to the ulcer specific care of patients who acquire pressure ulcers during their inpatient stay. Pressure ulcer prevention in acute care hospitals is surely not new, but it is a highly sensitive issue focused by several recent papers and reports (Zaratkiewicz, S, etal, 2010). The frequency of occurrence and rising cost of treating pressure ulcers is prompting health care industry to identify and implement interventions in order to prevent HAPUs. In the past, nursing units were responsible for the care and prevention of pressure ulcer care but the current studies have proved that pressure prevention and management needs multidisciplinary approach (AHRQ,…

The next decision made was to determine the number of seats at the bar and the number of tables in the seating area. I decided to go with a bar that contained 71 seats and a seating area with 12 tables. This also encourages customers to experience the bar comfortably while waiting to be seated. This may also increase the likelihood of customers that only come to the restaurant to for the bar experience. To further increase drink revenue, I decided to spend 3x the advertising budget to have a Happy Hour period with a restaurant opening time of 5:00pm. It is widely known in the restaurant/bar industry that drinks have a large profit margin. By encouraging this Happy Hour period, the restaurant will experience excellent sales in both the dinner…

Since 2008, the Fork and Dagger Pub has had an overall decrease in sales and revenue, continuing up to present 2012. To properly come up with a solution to increase the Pub’s sales, the reasons for decline must be identified and acknowledged. The first major reason for decline would be the economic recession to hit Canada in 2007. This would explain why Jason noticed that patron’s are purchasing less food or are having overall smaller orders. External factors like recession in the community will affect all sorts of businesses as well as the overall economic status. The next reason for deterioration would be the growing pub & bar venues appearing in Straun, Ontario. With direct competition resembling Big Joe’s Sports Bar & The Shark Tank, once regular customers are now wandering to try new venues. In addition, these new venues are also offering services like free karaoke, live bands & pool tables for socializing. While the Fork and Dagger Pub do not offer any additional functions like that, out of fear or losing space for tables or destroying the ‘atmosphere’ of the current pub.…

Thank you for retaining AaBCD Consulting in the valuation of your future capital improvement project. There are two mutually exclusive capital improvement projects under consideration: lease under-utilized space to an unrelated third party, Planet Karaoke Pub, or invest greater capital to open and manage your own nightclub, Beach Karaoke Pub. Using the predominant valuation methods, we have analyzed the relevant quantitative and qualitative data over their useful lives. In our assessment, we discuss the strengths and weaknesses of each approach as well as their relative weights in determining the financial viability of each project. There are three underlying assumptions driving our calculations: 1) a 10.75% discount rate, 2) a 10% guest room erosion rate, and 3) the omission of irrelevant staffing costs (16% of sales) due to long-term salary contracts. We have determined that while both options are profitable, Beach is more so. However, before a final decision is made, more research into the qualitative aspects of these undertakings needs to be done; community footprint impacts and room revenue erosion rates must also be examined in more detail.…
