I am going to tell three different stories of how steroids can affect your personal life and your sports life. I am going to tell the story of 3 pro baseball players and how steroids affected their lives. I am going to tell Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire and Sammy Sosa’s stories and how the steroid use affected their personal lives and their athletic lives as well. The definition of a steroid is a drug which mimics the effects of the male steroids testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. They increase protein synthesis within cells, which results in the buildup of cellular tissue (anabolism), especially in muscles.
The first example will be of Barry Bonds. Barry Bonds played for the San Francisco Giants from 1993- 2007. Bond is known as the greatest baseball player of his time, he hold numerous records like being a 14 time all star and 8 time gold award winner. Also he holds the records for most home run record in a season and the home run record for a career. In 2007 he was accused of lying to a federal jury for taking illegal steroids. If he is convicted he could serve up to 5 years in jail and the lowest sentence he could get would be probation. The steroid use for Bonds has proved to people that all those homeruns he hit were fake.
Steroids have also affected Mark McGwire. McGwire played for the Cardinals from 1997- 2001. McGwire held the home run record at 71 home runs until Barry Bonds broke that record with 73. McGwire openly admitted to using steroids during his career. He claimed that he didn’t need the steroids to hit home runs but he took the steroids for an entire decade so that obviously gave him some extra strength to hit hose home runs. He took the steroids to help him to recover from injury faster. Now people look at him and wonder if he wouldn’t have taken steroids, would he have been able to hit those home runs.
Steroids have also affected the lives of Sammy Sosa. Sosa played from 1989- 2006. He started for the Texas Rangers then... [continues]
