Examine the ways in which one religion uses scripture as a basis for its teachings about sexual behaviour (30 marks). The Christian religion implements the use of scripture as the highest command for the way in which sexual ethics is implemented. Christian teaching explores several issues in light of sexuality such as extra-marital and pre-marital sex, homosexuality and pro-creation and I will write about these in this essay. When looking at pre-marital sex, traditional Christian teachings of the bible suggest that sex is only for married couples and hetro-sexual couples. For example, Timothy 5:2: ‘As a Christian man, if you are not married to her, then she is your sister whom you must treat "with absolute purity." Similarly in 2 Corinthians 11:2: it uses the analogy of a Christian man receiving his bride "as a pure virgin." Virginity was the ideal. Premarital sex was viewed as sexual immorality. This clearly means that Christians should not participate in pre-marital sex because scripture states that is morally wrong, and therefore one would be going against the will of God. Roman Catholicism teaches that the joy and purpose of sex is to be found within the bounds of marriage and not outside of them. Having sex is part of the promise of God as found in Genesis. However, Liberal Christians are not so rigid in their teachings on pre-marital sex. They would encourage people to marry before having sex, but they realize that emotions and desires can sometimes get the better of us. If the relationship is committed and strong, then some Christians would not condemn pre-marital sex, as long as the intention was not to be promiscuous. Extra-marital sex means adultery in legal terms. One of the basic teachings of the Bible is ‘Thou shall not commit adultery’. Christian teaching emphasizes the bond of marriage as a sacred union that has been joined together by God, and in this union can take place.
