Eviews Manual for Lab session
Lab: 2:30 – 4:40pm, Wednesday
Venue: 3D67

Starting Eviews
Steps:
➢ Click on the Start button on the taskbar
➢ Look for All programs and click on it
➢ Click on Eviews 7 folder

➢ Double click on Eviews to lunch it Eviews Window

Creating a workfile and importing data
Steps:
➢ Click on File in the already opened Eviews Window
➢ Click on New
➢ Double click on Workfile to open

➢ Choose:

a) Unstructured/undated under Workfile structure when data has no regular pattern

1. Enter the number of observations under Data range

2. Click OK

b) Dated – regular frequency under Workfile structure type if the data has regular date pattern. e.g. Monthly, weekly etc.

1. Choose frequency type under Data specification

2. Enter start and end dates

3. Click OK

c) Balanced Panel – if dealing with panel data

1. Enter end and start dates

2. Enter number of cross-sections

3. Click OK

Saving workfile
Steps
➢ Click on Save in the workfile window
➢ Select where you want to save the file

➢ Name the file

➢ Click on Save

Alternatively:

➢ Click on File in the Eviews Window

➢ Click on Save As

➢ Select location to save file

➢ Enter file name

➢ Click Save

Opening saved workfile

Steps

➢ Click on File in the Eviews Window

➢ Click on Open in the drop-down list

➢ Click on Workfile

➢ Select file location and double click to load

Importing data from Excel
Steps:
➢ Click on File in the Eviews Window
➢ Select Import in the drop-down list
➢ Click on Import from File
➢ Double click the file location. E.g. desktop, etc.
➢ Click on the exact file
➢ Click on Open
➢ Click on next(s) and follow through to Finish

Editing data
a) Single series
Steps
➢ Double click on a series in the Eviews Workfile
➢ Click on Edit+/-
➢ Select a cell(s) and edit the value(s)
➢ Click Enter

b) Multiple series
Steps:
➢ Ctrl + Alt and click on the variables to be included ➢ Right click on the highlighted series
➢ Select Open
➢ Double click Open as Group in the pop out window
➢ Click on Edit+/- to activate the edit mode
➢ Change values as you want
➢ Click Enter

Renaming a series
Steps:
➢ Right click on the series you want to rename
➢ Click on Rename
➢ Type in your desired series name
➢ Click OK

Generating a series
Steps:
➢ Click Genr in the Workfile Window
➢ Generate the series
➢ Give it a name
➢ Click OK
Arithmetic operations in Eviews
➢ Take X and Y
➢ Addition: X+Y
➢ Deduction: X-Y
➢ Multiplication: X*Y
➢ Division: X/Y
➢ Power: X^Y

Exporting Data to Spreadsheet or Text File
Steps:
From the Workfile:
➢ Click on Proc
➢ Click on Export
➢ Click on Write Text-Lotus-Excel
➢ Enter name and output file in the SaveAS
➢ Click on Save

Descriptive statistics
Steps:
➢ Double click on the series of interest or open them as a group. This opens the data in a spreadsheet format ➢ Click on View
➢ Select Descriptive statistics
➢ Select Frequency, etc
➢ Click OK

For graph
Steps:
➢ Double click on a series in the Workfile
➢ Click on View
➢ Select Graph and pick graph type. E.g. Line/scatter, etc ➢ Click OK

Estimating equations:
To estimate the equation Y = a + bX + dZ, where a, b and d are coefficients, Y is the dependent variable and X and Z are independent variables. Three approaches:
a) Selection procedure
Steps:
➢ Click on Quick from Main Menu
➢ Click on Estimate Equation
➢ Enter the equation(Y c X Z) with each variable separated by space. NB: c is the constant “a”...
