Everything You Live Through Helps Make the Person You Are Now

“I've never tried to block out the memories of the past, even though some are painful. I don't understand people who hide from their past. Everything you live helps to make the person you are now.” by Sophia Loren. Everyone has memories of pain and ecstasy of the past, but we should keep them so it will help us in the future. In the book The Giver by Lois Lowry, the receiver is the only one that holds all the painful and happy memories. The Committee of Elders asked him or her for advice. The receiver then looks into the memories and these memories tell him what to do or not to do. Memories can be a lesson that you learn that will help you in the near future. Everything that you live through helps make who you are now. As I recall to the many memories of Christmas I had, there is only one particular Christmas that was very special to me. I woke up to the sound of laughter from my family. I scrambled out of my bed quickly, remembering it was Christmas. As I sprinted down the stairs, I already saw my cousin and brother unwrapping their presents. I swiftly grabbed a box that said “To: Nancy”. I was hoping this year was different from the rest: no more boring books or girly dolls. To my surprise, this year in this special box was a heart- shaped- locket made out of sterling silver. It had a picture of my whole family and the words “May all of your wishes come true.” My mom gave me a inviting smile, and I hastily ran to her to give a big, meaningful hug. This present was one of the best I had ever had because it was filled with love and passion. A painful memory that scarred my heart was when my best friend moved away when I was 6. We were always together at school and trips. We never split up. Until the day came, she moved away without telling me. As I walked up to her doorstep to ring the doorbell, I looked into the window, her living room was vacant; everything was gone. My little hands banged on the door, but no one answered. I ran home and quickly dialed her house phone, but no one picked up. Tears started flowing out of my eyes. I was devastated. My mom came over and said that they had to move immediately because her father needed a new job. A few months passed, and I still didn't see her. My mom said that they were going to come back, but they didn't. After a few years, my mom told me the real reason why they moved. They didn't have enough money to pay for the taxes and heating/ water bill. I still recall the day before she left. Amanda and I were together playing with our dolls when I looked outside across the street and saw a big truck parked outside of their house. I should've known that they were going to move, but I was trying to be optimistic. Instead, I found out what I thought was going to happen first, was true. After this painful memory, I became stronger. From this experience I learned that many things happen for a reason. In conclusion, the memories that I have lived thorough made me the person who I am now. I became stronger and understand why some things happen for a reason. When my friend moved away I was extremely sad, but now when I think back, I understand why she had to move. Some memories of the past can be painful, but it can help your future and present. Everything you live through helps make who you are now.

Though there are good memories, most memories will fall under a more serious category. Life gets hard with the loss of people that would stay forever. Sometimes this leads to a fall down; just to find out only one person has the ability to pick me back up. “I forgot all their last names first and their/ first names last in alphabetical order” (535). This quote reminds me of loss in life. The loss of family and of close friends to things that are unchangeable. The things that do not really mean anything are most memorable. While saying this, do not take special memories for granted. Every person has a meaning and no matter where life leads, those special or tragic memories will be stored for later…

Learning to deal with, and share the memories from a lifetime ago is important. “The communities of memory that tie us to past also turn us toward the future as communities of hope,”2 Bellah explains. By remembering the past we see the pain, the misfortune, the danger, and the list could go on and on; but we also see hope for a better tomorrow. Recalling the bad, while looking at a problem facing the present, reminds us we are stronger than we think. Just as the communities each of us live in faced hardship to get to the place they are now, they will face even more, but are stronger now than they were at the beginning. This is because, “… collective memory is a source of social strength.”3 The strength of the nation, city,…

Whether their memories are positive or negative, they will all take an impact on how you will become as a person. It has been stated in the Identity Theory and I believe that the theory is correct based on my own personal life. I had a difficult childhood growing up, but those experiences have taught me to be the person I am. My bullying has caused a large injury to my childhood, but learning my lessons on how to fight back and be an advocate changed the person I become. All can relate to that one special time of the year, Christmas, when whole families unite and spend hours endlessly sharing stories, making memories, and of course, opening presents! What happens though, when all of the sentimental value of Christmas is replaced solely with physical value, the gifts? What would Christmas be like then? Richard Rodriguez takes the readers through one of his annual Christmases and brings to light, through his thoughts, the disconnect that exists between himself, his siblings, and his parents. Rodriguez’ chronological presentation of events with flashbacks, short, abrupt syntax, light-hearted attention to detail and concerned tone contribute to suggest his worried attitude toward his family.…

After that thanksgiving, the next time we all saw each other was at Christmas. Mom was, for the first time, able to actually get us gifts. After our big Christmas dinner, mom told all our kids the story of Christmas. The next morning we all sat around the Christmas tree exchanging gifts. “Here”, Mom said, “This one is for you Jeanette”, as she handed me a small box. I looked up at Mom and saw her smiling as wide as her face would let her. I looked inside the box and saw the little doll that I had when I was very little but had to leave behind when we left our camp at the beginning of my story. I was so surprised she had found another one of the exact same dolls. My happiness was tangible, and I immediately stood up and gave her a hug. Mom did the same for Brian, Lori, and Maureen.…

For twenty years I have been gathering memories of my father and while some are bad, ninety nine percent of them are great ones. The one funny thing about memories is that you never realize they are going to be memories until long after the occurrence takes place. My grandfather, a veteran of the US Military, was a husband and father of 6 sons. Our family has never been rich nor wealthy, but my Grandfather was a hard worker and made many treasures for my Grandmother. When I was just a little girl my Grandma told me the story of how I came to be named Tiffany, my Grandfather insisted because he was very ill that he named the last grandchild he will get to meet. Then she brought out a beautiful chest, not a big chest but a petite one you could put on a shelf or dresser and gave it to me, said she knew he would want me to have it. It was hand made by my Grandfather for my Grandmother for their first anniversary. I cherish the chest, not because it is fancy or expensive, it is a memory of my Grandfather and Grandmother’s love. The box represents our family bond and how no matter rich or poor there is something beautiful if you just open your mind and create it. Beauty isn’t only found in diamonds and pearls, it’s in family, love, and…

    Best Christmas Ever

Every year I have a great Christmas spending valuable time with family and friends. This past Christmas was the best I’ve ever had. I received the best unexpected gift ever! It all started when everyone in my family came to my house early Christmas morning for breakfast. After breakfast we started passing out gifts. First, we would usually go in a huge circle and everyone would open one gift at a time. This time was different and very odd to me. My family would let everyone open a gift and would skip me. At first, I wondered why I didn’t get my turn yet, but then, I thought to myself that something was up. After a while, my family let me open some of my gifts so that I wouldn’t suspect anything. Next, my whole family huddled up whispering to each other. I then knew that something wasn’t right which made me get a little angry. After my family’s little huddle, they handed me a card. As I read the card, I come across the words,” You will be going on a 7 day cruise to Mexico!” I stood up screaming to the top of my lungs with enjoyment. I cried happy tears because I never expected to go on a cruise especially without my parents. All of my family members rushed to me and gave me a big hug. My grandmother and I cried together in joy and sadness because she was happy for me but at the same time, she didn’t want to see her oldest grandchild leave the country without her being there with me. Over all, my family gave me some advice on what to do and what not to do while I’m on the cruise. I had a great time on the cruise and got to learn about a different culture from mines. It was a unforgettable experience and I would never forget the best Christmas…
