Abstract
Several years ago the American Nurses Association (ANA) and the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) recognized that there was a need for better health care in the medical field. Because of this, nurses started to delegate tasks to other personnel so they could concentrate on the more complex tasks that they were skilled to do in school. Both associations realized that delegation was not just an action it was an essential nursing skill that would ultimately increase effective and save patient care. As nursing tasks started to become more complex the nurse population as a whole began to be spread thin and the level of care they were giving was not to the standard that was needed. This caused the health care milieu to be stressful and chaotic. Institutions began to realize that delegation was going to be pivotal in nursing, and was going to be the only means for nurses to effectively utilize assistive personnel (AP) with assigned tasks and be able to give the level of care that is needed to the growing patient population. To be a nurse in this day and age it is imperative to have a clear understanding and ability to delegate, assign, and supervise assistive personnel to achieve the highest level of patient satisfaction and care (National Council of State Boards of Nursing, 2008).
