Eveline Keeps Her Mother’s Promise
Assignment # 1

Eveline keeps her mother’s promise
Eveline was a motherless daughter who lived with her father. She had four siblings, one of her brother was dead, and the other was never around and was busy with work. And the rest two were young children who went to school. Eveline’s father was a violent and abusive man. She was not exactly living with him happily. There was no one to protect her from him. He would not give her money properly, and would be very violent towards her. She had to do a lot to hold the family together and make sure the kids went to school regularly and ate regular meals.
The story starts with Eveline walking down her memory lane and talking about her childhood memories, so for that fact we know that even though her father was abusive she still did have fond memories of her childhood and neighborhood. And then the story shifts to Eveline’s present situation. Eveline was planning to elope with her lover. She wanted to leave her father and live with her lover in a distant unknown country.
Eventually at the end of the story Eveline changes her mind at the very moment of eloping regardless of her unhealthy relationship with her father.
Her promise to her mother and attachment to family and surroundings was putting her in dilemma about taking such a decision of eloping. And on top of that her father’s warning about having an affair with a sailor raised doubts in her mind since she did know him for a very short period. The text gives evidence of all the facts above but her mother is mentioned repetitively in the passage. So I think it is her promise to her mother mainly which holds her back and stops her from eloping eventually.
Her mother is mentioned a couple of times in the text, and near the end of the story again her promise to her mother is mentioned. She said that she knew the thought of breaking her mother’s promise would haunt her everyday if she left, for she promised her mother that she would keep the home together as

There is a lack of resolution at the end of the story which seems to be the reason why the writer seems to be looking back at a past memory, perhaps to relieve the guilt she feels towards her actions now that she didn’t feel before. ‘We stepped back out into the sunlight of the garden.’ This shows that Eveline does not feel any guilt toward her actions as she is seen to be protecting her siblings. By the way the stepped into the sunlight it makes it seem that any blame that would have been put on her for concealing the truth is gone as she was doing the right thing by stopping her siblings from having to experience the adult world.…

Estrella’s mother, Petra, was left a long time ago by her husband. Estrella learns from her father’s loss that men cannot be trusted or depended on, and that women will usually always be left to take care of the family. Just as Petra has been abandoned physically by Estella’s father, and mentally by Perfecto, Estella soon will come to be abandoned by Aledo. The fact that Perfecto has not married her mother extends the idea of lack of promise made by the men in her life. Estrella knows that the world of men and women through her mother Petra and Perfecto Viramontes is insightful to the men in some ways, but she does emphasize that when the men abandon the family, the women are left to bear for themselves and their children. Estrella and Aledo’s relationship, serves as a major basis for the author's claim in the idea of suffering. Aledo’s death represents how once a female is left…

In the short story “Eveline”, I was extremely disappointed at the ending. The author builds up great anticipation of her escape and she doesn’t even end up leaving. Her dad seems like a real jerk—I would’ve gotten the hell out of there. On the other hand, I do understand why she decided against leaving. I think guilt ate at her because of the promise she had made to her deceased mother. She had promised to take care of her father and…

In their earlier days Aunt Georgiana and Uncle Howard wanted to be married, but Aunt Georgiana was almost nine years older that Uncle Howard and he did not have very much money. Their families did not approve on a marriage and the couple reacted. Aunt Georgiana and Uncle Howard responded to their family's disapproval by eloping. This decision was a good one in my eyes because even though blood is thicker than water, which means family should mean more, love makes the world go around.…

In conclusion, Eveline was morally unable to break her mother's wish because of her beliefs on her religion. The period in which Eveline lived in did not allow her to escape her family because women were expected to continue with responsibility of a dead mother. Perhaps the most important reason why Eveline was trapped with staying with her family is her deathbed promise she made to her mother and morally could not break that…
