Abstract

Labour costs are increasing rapidly especially in Sri Lanka and other Asian subcontinent. But in South Indian subcontinent remain its lowest while Sri Lanka has to face the challenge to retain its competitiveness with its higher labour cost.

Therefore Srilankan industries will have to pay more attention to improve productivity while reduce its associate cost. Hence the costs of failures (cost of additional material, overtime, Air freight) have to manage effectively.

The absenteeism is one of the main factors which contribute to cost of failure. This paper discusses and evaluates the current available incentive system which is used by Colourit [Pvt] Ltd to control the absenteeism and its scope for improvement. This includes Guideline to prepare a motivating mix for the organization to improve the attendance of employees to work.

The study was carried out in two stages. In the 1st stage, analyze the pattern of payment of attendance incentive from 2007 September to 2010 August. For this all the payrolls were analyzed It shows from 7% - 34% of employees did not obtained this incentive fully or partially. In the 2nd stage a questionnaire was distributed and carried out a survey to collect data to investigate the effectiveness of this attendance incentive payment and to obtain the real ideas of the employee’s about the attendance incentive payment. It was checked few other areas which are directly related to the employee’s motivation to report to work with out getting absent or unauthorized leave through this questionnaire to support in preparing a new motivating mix for the organization to create a motivated work force.
