Euthanasia should be legal in California
I believe people should have the choice to a peaceful, pain-free death with planning and information provided by their doctor and euthanasia would give people this choice if it were legal in California.
If a person has the legal right to decide what to do with their body then they should have the right to decide to end their life. The Supreme Court has stated we do have this right; therefore, California should make euthanasia legal. The Supreme Court decisions concerning the right to refuse medical treatment and the right to abortion shows a clear pattern that should apply to a mentally competent, terminally ill person having a protected right in choosing to end their life. Oregon, Washington and Montana have all passed laws that give people the option of euthanasia and the Supreme Court has upheld these rights so California could legally make this choice.
If someone is living with a terminal illness or intractable pain then they can become a financial, emotional and physical burden to family, friends and society. If someone becomes a financial, emotional or physical burden then they suffer inadequate care become sicker and depressed and die alone and broke. If someone is living with a terminal illness or intractable pain then they will suffer inadequate care and become sicker. The inadequate funding for palliative care and pain management, and governments' reliance on nursing homes, all contribute to the despair felt by many who are living with a terminal illness, intractable pain, or are afflicted with debilitating conditions. A survey in Oregon, U.S.A., one of the few places where euthanasia is legal, showed, however, that in 66% of cases the reason for patients' requests was because they did not want to be a burden. Questions about what care to give and when to quit are deeply personal. A USA TODAY/Kaiser/ABC poll of 1,201 Americans taken by telephone in September 2006 found the public divided on the answers....
