Ethnic Groups and Discrimination

The ethnic group that I chose is African American’s. I am of Dominican and Haitian decent. I was born in a small town Upstate New York. At the tender age of two I was brought to live in Brooklyn NY. I was raised in a perdominantly “Black Neighborhood”. Through the years I have heard many stories from the parents and grandparents of some of my friends. I have heard stories about their family having to face segregation, racism, prejudice,and descrimination. I knew that this was all true because I was also learning about it in school. Most African Amercans lived in southern states such as North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia etc. In these states slavery was very serious. African Americans were treated and looked at as property. They were bought, sold and due to that families were separated. There was a point in time where African Americans were given a hard time to do anything. There opinions were not heard and they weren’t able to make decisions about anything on their own. In the times of the Civil Rights Movement Whites felt as if they were better than “the colored folks”. Looking back at the days of Segregation, blacks were treated as if they were stupid. They couldn’t use the same bathrooms, they had to go to different schools, they had to eat at different restaurants, live in different communities. They had to board different buses and if on the bus with whites they had to go to the back of the bus. These option were not by choice they were forced upon them.
African American’s were definitely affected by Redlining and Dual labor market in the early stages of liberation. They did not have access to a good education and some did not have access to an education at all. Even those who had a little education only had access to low paying jobs and were kept in a poor class. They were forced to settle for lower positions than their white counterparts. That was a form of prejudice as well.... [continues]
