Ethnic Groups and Discrimination

The ethnic group to which I belong is African American. The African American people were not colonized, nor were they immigrants. The Africans were forced to the new world by Europeans who sold them into slavery. The African Americans were brought to America on ships and were packed and chained together in a lying position because there were so many of them that there was no room to stand. They were brought to the ne world for labor.
The Europeans first choice was the Native Americans, but the Native Americans were not immune to the diseases that the Europeans brought with them to the new world, and because of this reason, the African were more profitable. The group faced the combination of prejudices, segregation, and racism. The faced prejudice, because of the color of their skin, and an opinion was formed about Africans that were hostile and damaging.
The African Americans faced segregation, because the majority of whites did not want whites and blacks together in the same place. There were signs placed on everything that separated whites from blacks. The signs that were posted on the walls and doors read “for colored only or whites only”. African Americans were not allowed to drink from the same fountains, use the same rest rooms, or eat at the same counters and their white counterparts.
The African Americans faced racism, because of hatred of the African race or color of their skin. An example of that racism would be when one of the nine children in Little Rock Arkansas, Jefferson Thomas went to class with the same white boys that he played basketball with, said to him, “well I don’t mind playing basketball or football with you or anything. You guys are good at sports. Everybody knows that, but you’re just not smart enough to sit next to me in the classroom (Thomas, 2010).
