The first Filipinos that came to America were referred to Luzon Indians. They immigrated to America on October 17, 1587. They first landed in Morro Bay, California. More and more Filipinos came to America aboard ships, most of them landing in California some in Texas and some in Alaska. Today the largest population of Filipinos in America is in California. There are incidents of discrimination against this race. I have experienced some myself and some I have just been in denial. In America, Filipinos have experienced different types of discrimination. They have experienced institutional discrimination. An example of this is when the EEOC (U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission) filed a lawsuit against L&T Group of Companies, LTD., for discrimination against their Filipino employees. Some Filipinos have experienced glass ceilings where the authors of Workplace Discrimination and Health Among Filipinos, describe it as bamboo ceilings. It’s unfortunate, but I have experienced discrimination myself from being Filipino. Not only from others discriminating against my race, but also redlining from other Filipinos themselves where they have steered me to use only Filipino businesses or to go to only Filipino areas.
On July 29, 2009 the EEOC settled 4 discrimination lawsuits against L&T companies. The company was discriminating against national origin, age, a pregnancy. Filipinos were among the groups that were being discriminated against experiencing institutional discrimination. Filipino workers were segregated and not allowed to use the company’s cafeteria to eat their food. They had to pack their own lunch and eat it outside. They were also given less overtime work in comparison to another national origin employee. One Filipino supervisor was experiencing verbal abuse due to her race and eventually lead to being fired due to her national origin.
