Ethnic Groups and Discrimination
I am a member of the Negro, Black, African American culture. I listed the many names because being identified by any of these titles does nothing to describe my character. I will however answer the questions asked about the group that I identify with.
The Negro, Black, and/or African American came to this country in the early 1600’s. This group of people arrived as indentured servants. Being a person of color I have read information and viewed video footage of the prejudice and racism that the African American culture has endured since being brought to the United Sates. I have personally experienced racism and prejudice because of the color of my skin. Segregation was a way of life for the United States. Segregation refers primarily to the legally or socially enforced separation of African Americans from other races. Racial segregation in the United States has meant the physical separation and provision of separate facilities.
I believe that racism and segregation was all about money. The blacks came here with nothing and the people who brought them here did not bring them here to share the wealth. Slavery existed in Africa between tribes even before whites took slaves. Slavery was a form of servitude for tribes who lost battles to other African tribes.
For example, it was a popular belief among many whites that the presence of blacks in a white neighborhood would bring down property values, so the government created a way to legally segregate the country. They encouraged white families to move to the suburbs and gave them loans. Although black families were entitled to the loans they were denied because they lived in areas that were in decline. In addition to encouraging white families to move to suburbs by providing them loans to do so, the government uprooted many established African American communities by building elevated highways through their neighborhoods.
