I live in Muskegon, Michigan. I was born here and I have lived here all of my life. Whether I was still living with my parents as a child, or I moved out with my husband, I have always lived within thirty miles from the same area. Of course, we have all dealt with race issues in the past, as everyone probably has. Some people deal with it on a daily basis, and some people rarely have an encounter with the situation. I attended school in the Reeths-Puffer School District for twelve straight years, and I am happy to report that there were never any main issues or problems dealing with race, ethnicity, or background origin. Of course, this certain High School was made up of predominantly Caucasian Americans. "Diversity is not a virus, you don't just catch it, and students of color know they are devalued even without affirmative action.” (Wahl, 2003).
In my community, I would say that the majority of the people do look like me. Most of the people where I live are Caucasian Americans. However, there are those that do not look like me. In my community, I have seen a lot of African American’s, and some Asian Americans and Mexican Americans. Like every other community there is an area that is considered to be the “bad” part of town. Which I think is racist in a way. My bad part of town is called Muskegon Heights, Michigan. Muskegon Heights mostly consists of African Americans. We are all the same as each other when it comes down to the core.
Leaders in my community treat all individuals to be equal from what I have observed. I think that is why they are considered to be good leaders. I have not really seen or heard of them treating people differently when it comes to race, ethnicity or even culture. As far as I know, all of the individuals in this town are pretty content with the
