My Little Community and It’s Lack of Diversity

    America is the land of many colors, the land of many cultures, America, a place where someone from abroad can come and better their life and make a new home. At least most of America is like that. My community is a small community; one someone may call ‘White America’, a community where everyone looks like everyone else. The census for Montcalm County in 2008 stated that 95.1% of it’s’ residents were white. Although most within the community are hospitable others do not seem to want to move here. Small communities have many advantages like going to a store and everyone knowing you, or when something bad happens everyone comes to help, unfortunately diversity is not one of those advantages.
    Diversity within a small community does not seem to happen often. The older generations seem to be set in their ways. The middle generation that decides to stay in the community tend to follow that of the older generation. The majority of the diversity in a small community lies within the younger generation. Many are prone to follow those on the television and develop their own way of doing things. Within my community you see more of the older generation turn away from people that are different. Most do not speak ill toward them they just do not talk to or acknowledge them. The middle generation is much more vocal and would be the most prejudice group. Even though I have seen little prejudice is primarily comes from them. That age group seems to feel that the small communities need to stay small and do not need growth. The youngest or newest generation is the most laid back and accepting of those not like them. I feel that we owe this to television and music. They appear to see everyone as equals and look past the color of their skin or the accent in their voice.
