One may not consider the United States Marine Corps a professional organization but I do. The Marine Corps is more than just one branch of the United Sates armed forces. It is an organization that holds its members to the highest of moral and ethical values. These values transcend though each member not only in his or her work ethic but also his or her personal lives.
The Marine Corps is one of seven branches in the Unites States armed forces. A man named of Captain Samuel Nicolas established the Marine Corps in 1775. Captain Nicolas would set up his first recruiting post in a tavern in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, named Tun Tavern. Captain Nicolas would form two battalions of Continental Marines, making Tun Tavern the birthplace of the Marine Corps.
The main purpose of the Marine Corps in 1775 was to provide and infantry unit for the ships to assist in duties such as: ship-to-ship fighting, provide security for the ship, enforce disciplinary action, and assist in landing forces. The Marine Corps mission has evolved with the change of time and foreign policy of the United States. The Marine Corps has served in nearly every conflict foreign or domestic in the history of the United States. As of 2009 the Marine Corps had roughly 200,000 active commission and enlisted members and another, roughly, 40,000 reservist serving. For these 240,000 men and women and for the hundreds of thousand of men and women who have claimed the title of United States Marine, to include myself, have been taught three core values that we live, work and play buy, Honor, Courage, and Commitment. These three values are the foundation of the Corps and for life. The definitions of each core values as stated by the United States Marine Corps Recruit Handbook are as follows:
