There are several reasons why ethics and integrity are important for a police chief or county sheriff. One reason that ethics and integrity are important in this position as they set the model for what all the officers underneath them should act like. They should be completely above reproach as they are the highest ranking officer in that department. It will be impossible for a police chief or county sheriff to be able to expect their officers to have ethics and integrity when they do not exhibit it themselves. According to Hess, Orthmann and LaDue (2011), “To clarify the expectations regarding officer ethics and integrity, most law enforcement departments have a formal code of ethics, often framed and hanging on the wall” (p. 269). Another reason why ethics and integrity is important for a police chief or county sheriff is that they will be highly monitored by the community. A law enforcement agency that is not respected by the community it serves will have a harder time getting their job done. Individuals are not going to be willing to come forward if they see something or report a crime if they believe that because the police chief or county sheriff does not have ethics and integrity the rest of the department is the same as those individuals in charge of it. The final reason that ethics and integrity is important for a police chief or county sheriff is that they will have a difficult time recruiting good officers to serve in their department.
