Chapter 3: The Development of Dominant Minority Group Relations in Preindustrial America The Blauner Hypothesis
* Sociologist Robert Blauner hypothesis consisted of two different initial relationship, - colonization and immigration. His hypothesis was : minority group created by colonization will experience more intense prejudice, racism and discrimination than those created by immigration. Furthermore, the disadvantaged status of colonized group will persist longer and be more difficult to overcome than the disadvantaged status faced by group created by immigration

Colonized minority group: are forced into minority status by the superior military and political power of the dominant group. Such as African Americans.
They Faced massive inequality and attacks on their culture.
they were recognized as slaves due to the difference of their physical characteristics.

Those minority groups that were created by the colonization faced harsher rejection than the groups created by immigration. Even though the immigrant minority group was pressurized to migrate due to famine or political persecution. They had some control over their destination and their position in the society where as the colonized minority had no options and were just placed there. Blauner states that entering into American society involved a degree of choices and self-direction that was for the most part denied to people of color. Voluntary immigration made it more likely that.. European..ethnic group would identify with America and see that host culture as a positive opportunity. Blauner stresses that the initial differences between colonized and immigrant minority groups have consequences that persist long after the original contact. For example the average income, years of education and unemployment rate of the European immigrant are equal with nation norms today.
