‘From a religious point of view, some human beings are more valuable than others.’ How far do you agree? (15 marks) Christian’s are firm believers in equality as all humans are made in the image and likeness of God. St Paul wrote in Galatians 3:28, “… There is no longer slave or free, there is no longer male and female, for all of you are one in Christ Jesus” However, historically women have not always been treated equally within the Church. For example many women’s roles are not considered as equal compared to the male roles. Although many dominations have changed to make male and female roles equal, some traditions have still been kept- within Roman Catholicism, ministers and priests are roles which can only men are able to fulfil, however this does not mean that women do not play a vital role within the Church. Protestant Christianity is mixed: many Protestant churches within Europe are fairly liberal, working for the equality of women and disregarding that homosexuality is a sin, however some churches in this denomination have yet to adapt to modern views; for example, the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod refuses to ordain women and considers homosexuality to be a sin. Charismatic and Pentecostal churches have been ordaining women for many years, as they believe the ultimate authority is the Holy Spirit, whom can manifest itself in a male or female. Therefore, women are allowed to become a church leader, regardless of some scriptural passages which forbid it. Most Christian denominations accept that all races are equal. The Anglican Church’s previous archbishop, George Carey, stated: “Racism has no part in the Christian Gospel. It contradicts our Lord’s command to love our neighbour as ourselves. It offends the Christian belief that every person is made in the image of God and is equally precious. It solves no problems and creates nothing but fear and hatred”.
