Ethical Perspectives and Personal Values
Today’s manager is concerned with many areas of an organization’s performance. Areas of concern include productivity, profitability, employment issues, and technological factors. These areas can be time-consuming and complex, but they remain fairly specific and defined. An area that is not always easily defined or understood is ethics. Business ethics is not just another skill that can be added to the manager’s repertoire of competencies (Warren, 2000).
One perspective of business ethics of business ethics focuses on practices of a company, the basic things the company does and how its people spend their time and energy. For a business to be lasting and successful, the organization’s mission must be preserved and its values must have top priority (Gill, 2005). Leaders are role models for other employees in an organization. Leaders’ behavior and values set clear standards for dealing with ethical issues.
Most individuals view what is right and wrong from their own perspective. Reflecting on that process is important in creating self-awareness and respect for other viewpoints. The Williams Institute for Ethics and Management (2002) offers a tool to analyze characteristics of ethical perspectives in the Ethics Awareness Inventory (EAI). For each question, an individual selects an answer with which he or she agrees most and an answer with which he or she agrees least. The tool evaluates the answers and reveals the perspective the individual identifies with most closely and the perspective he or she identifies with the least of four CORE (Character, Obligation, Results, and Equity) beliefs.
According to the EAI, my ethical views are based on obligation. This viewpoint considers a person’s intent behind his or her actions, rather than the actions themselves, results, or equity.
