1. Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to outline initial response to the views presented in the reading and the respond to the moral claim (appendix 1). The final stage of the assignment is to reconsider the initial response. Act Utilitarian and Kantian moral theories were chosen in order to respond to the moral claim. These theories were chosen as they both offer an answer to the question “What shall I do?”, but using different theoretical approaches.
2. Initial response
Reading all the material about possible effects of the violent video games on the children’s behaviour, especially materials based on the laboratory research helped me to shape my opinion about the issue discussed in this assignment. My thoughts are: kids are the kids, many children play computer games, some of them play violent video games and some do not (National institute on media and the family, 2003). The choice of the game depends on many aspects, but I think the character of the child is the core. It is obvious that energised, well socialising youth generation is like a “sponge” which observes every thing that flows nearby. Kids can see violence every where, even before they are able to handle video games.
The fact that children play violent video games is more an “indicator” of how kids are influenced by violence, and less a “facilitator” or an “engine” of the violence. We have to think locally to be able to handle this problem on the global scale. Parents do not participate in the life of their children therefore give them easy access to violent video games (National institute on media and the family, 2003).
