Ethics Issues
What is business ethics? Business ethics is the applied ethics discipline that addresses the moral features of commercial activity (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy). Business ethics is not primarily concerned with the description of moral systems in societies. However, ethics are extremely important to all business people. Ethics in the workplace is vital to companies to ensure that employees or in accordance with company policies and procedures. Employees are becoming more knowledgeable about company mission statements and ethics in which businesses perceive them as. This new era of awareness I believe has to do with the fall of Enron, Madoff Investment, and Stanford Bank just to name a few. We as individuals face ethical dilemmas virtually every day, companies face a vast amount of ethical issues, because they have a huge following and an image to uphold behind closed doors and in the eyes of the public. Current issues within the business today that is affecting our community and organization is the Detroit EMS lay off’s, BP Oil Spill and conflict issues (employees, management, community).
  Currently taken place today is the Detroit EMS layoff that has one asking is this ethical. Budget woes and labor standoffs could result in fewer ambulances on Detroit streets. Pardo, S. & MacDonald, C (2010) stated his week, a union representing Detroit EMS workers notified its members that 33 people would be laid off by July 1 to save about $2.6 million. The decision to lay off EMS workers does not seem ethical, although it is a benefit for the company to cut cost in this area and save them millions. One must wonder is this ethical, in the business world companies pride themselves on mission statements and image, though their actions make one wonder where does moral and ethics come into play.
