A biofuel is a source of energy that is made from living things or their products. Biobutanol, a four-carbon alcohol, is a type of biofuel. It has a higher energy than ethanol and can be used in vehicles without them needing modifications to their engines (1). Biobutanol is related to photosynthesis because the biobutanol can come from plants of biomass feedstocks, hence the name, biomass butanol (2). Biomass feedstocks are the plant matter that fuels are derived from. Biobutanol can be, in its first and simplest form, a plant that performs photosynthesis.…
The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 mandates that by 2022 36 billion gallons of biofuels will be produced in the United States. 15 billion gallons of this biofuel is expected to come from corn. (1) This will require the sacrifice of enough food to feed 166,000,000 people--over half the current population of the United States. This doesn't even take into consideration that it takes at least 2/3 gallon of fossil fuel, by the US Department of Energy's own figures, to produce one gallon of ethanol. (2) (Ethanol producers do not use ethanol to produce ethanol because it is too expensive.)…
Do you know what is going to claim the increase in world consumption this year? Cars, not people. The grain required to fill a 25-gallon SUV gas tank with ethanol will feed one person for a year. The grain needed to fill that same tank every two weeks over a year will feed up to 26 people! Yes, there are places where we help satisfy hunger, but this food runs out! Not everyone gets to eat, and you are trying to take what little food we have for them and convert it into fuel! You must understand the consequences that this decision can bring.…
In Brazil 10% of the energy used is provided from ethanol. In car fuel the mix of ethanol and petrol is about 85% ethanol with only about 15% petrol but in Australia fuels that contain ethanol are mainly about 10% ethanol and 90% petrol. Though a 85% ethanol blend has started being used in Australia but is not available at all petrol stations. As a car fuel it is blended with petrol to decrease how fast petrol burns, extend petrol reserves and to reduce green house gas emissions. For Brazil the use of ethanol as a car fuel has been very successful as it has a very large starch industry. It is also beneficial to the country economically because the high concentration use of ethanol has replaced expensive oil imports with locally produced fuels.…
A major ongoing issue in the world is the pollution of our atmosphere, one the factors that contributes to the pollution of our atmosphere is Gasoline which produces CO2 and is emitted into the atmosphere when Gasoline is used. There are 7 major alternate resources for Gasoline that will not only be beneficial to the Earth's environment but may be less expensive than Gasoline. One of the 7 major alternate source for Gasoline is the fuel Ethanol. Ethanol is a renewable fuel made from corn (not necessarily always corn) and other plant materials or biomass (organic matter used as a fuel). The chemical formula for fuel CH3CH2OH, it is also known as Ethyl alcohol and can be found as several 'Blends'.…
It's believed the use of ethanol, a "greenhouse neutral" fuel and can reduce greenhouse emissions - because the CO2 it liberates when burnt is hust that which was used in its synthesis. However, there are greenhouse gas emissions associated the manufacture of fertilisers, cultivation and transport of crops, and the distillation process. So ethanol is not 'greenhouse neutral'…
In this activity you will find out why ethanol is an important chemical. You will study three ways of making industrial ethanol. Then decide which of the methods is ‘greenest’, or most sustainable, in the UK.…
In the chapter I learned that ethanol is not as renewable as it seems. It is an alternative to biofuel, and corn can be grown and grown again, but what about all the fossil fuels that are used to produce the ethanol? The only way it could be used as an alternative to nonrenewable resources is if we find a way to produce it without using fossil fuels. In addition it is not as efficient. We would have to use twenty five percent more ethanol to be equal the amount of energy gasoline produces costing the consuming to buy more, and spend more money. I also don’t believe it will make us less dependent on imports from foreign countries. In chapter 2, it notes that we only get three percent of our gasoline usage from the Persian Gulf. Three percent of our gasoline usage would be equivalent to fifty percent of our total farmland. Where would we farm the other ninety-seven percent of our gasoline usage that we get from Mexico and Canada? We would have to import it from Brazil making us dependent on them for our ethanol!…
Ethanol, also called ethyl alcohol is a volatile, flammable, colorless liquid. The largest single use of ethanol is as a motor fuel and fuel additive. Ethanol is considered to be better for the environment than gasoline. It is a renewable source of energy and it has been seen as a promising alternative to fossil fuel consumption. However, there are some negative aspects in the production and usage of this fuel. It is considered to be inefficient and it indirectly affects the environment too.…
In this paper I will explore the use of ethanol as an alternative fuel source. Ethanol is considered a renewable energy resource; as it is derived from crops such as: corn, sugarcane, beets, as well as, other organic materials. The use of ethanol could decrease our dependence on ever depleting supplies of fossil fuels; such as oil.…
Ethanol has been sold to the American people by politicians as a reliable, relatively clean, sustainable source of energy to replace gasoline. This seems to be far from the truth. Even if all of America’s corn was used for food production it would still only help to replace 6% of the total amount of oil consumed by the U.S. The grain required to fill just one 25-gallon gas tank would feed a person for an entire year.…
Corn has been extremely helpful in helping our environment by being used in ethanol. Ethanol is used as gasoline and is helping our planet by using renewable resources as fuel instead of fossil fuels. One may not know this but one probably has ethanol in one’s gas tank right now, since it is in 95% of public gas pumps in the US. Ethanol is advancing developments in a more eco-friendly fuel. Ethanol is very helpful and the pros outweigh the cons by so much that is why it is so widely used throughout the US. a pro of ethanol is that since it is natural it is not as harmful to the air as regular gasoline would be. A con is that is destroys one’s engine faster but the earth is more important than an engine. The University of Illinois has been working on developing newer and more efficient ways to use ethanol. Ethanol is by no means brand new to society as the first engine that could run off of ethanol was invented in 1826 by Samuel Morey. In 1908 the first car that could use ethanol as a fuel was the Model T Ford invented by Ford Motor Companies. Ethanol is required by law to be in gasoline because it is part of the Clean Air Act(1990), the Alternative Motor Fuels Act(1988), the Energy policy Act(2005),and the Renewable Fuel Standard Program(RFS). Ethanol is widely used and very beneficial to our environment and society. Ethanol is the term for Corn alcohol and that is why corn is involved with…
Alcohol based fuels are used as alternatives to fuels that come entirely from non-renewable resources. The most common of these are ethanol and methanol. These two substances have a few similarities, but also significant differences. The similarities are so few that they can be listed concisely; just appearance and smell are similar for these two chemicals. If an individual were presented with samples of each of these chemicals, they would have to ignite it or consume it in order to tell the difference. If igniting these chemicals it can be seen that methanol burns hotter due to the white flame compared to the blue flame of ethanol. Additionally, due to the toxic nature of methanol if it is consumed it will poison the person ingesting it, but ethanol will make the consumer drunk.…
The scientists then went into deeper research about ethanol and how it will react with the other parts of the equation for the chemical explosion. Ethanol (C2H6O), also called ethyl alcohol, is a type of compound chemical. It is commonly found in alcoholic beverages. It is being looked into and researched as an alternative to powering vehicles and other things that run and depend on gasoline because it is a cleaner and more environment friendly energy source.…
There are other ways to get energy by solar and wind and water but they are not as popular and are more costly. Although, when used with the ethanol we can…
