Wal-Mart was started over fifty years ago in Arkansas and within those fifty years has emerged into the largest retailer in the world. Wal-Mart operates in many countries with thousands of stores and millions of employees. One reason for Wal-Mart’s is the value and hard work they put into upholding their code of ethics. Wal-Mart has three basic beliefs – respect for the individual, service to their customers, and striving for excellence. Of the five key elements that I believe are key foundations for the ethics and character for the company, three come from their basic beliefs. The five key elements of Wal-Mart’s code of conduct are – respect, service to customers, striving for excellence, integrity, and honest. Wal-Mart uses these five key elements to make ethical and socially responsible decisions. Respect for the individual is important in Wal-Mart’s ethical and socially responsible behavior. Respect for the individual means Wal-Mart does not discriminate with any employees. Respect for an individual includes having respect for coworkers, customers, vendors, or anyone else associated with their organization. Wal-Mart also does not tolerate any form of harassment which can include verbal, physical, or visual, harassment. Wal-Mart also ensures that their employees work in an environment free from violence, which is why they have a zero tolerance for any type of behavior that could create a hostile working environment. Wal-Mart believes in having a diversified workplace and believes in “providing an environment free of discrimination to our associates, customers, members, and suppliers.” (Duke, 2008) By respecting the individual Wal-Mart is providing benefits to their company, their employees, and their customers.
