Eth 125 Final Paper
Final Project TOBIAS A. TERRELL ETH /125 27 JUNE 2013 SHANDA JONES-BUREL Final Project This class has been challenging in many ways and has encouraged me to look at ethics and cultural diversity in many different ways. Institutional discrimination, racial discrimination, age discrimination, and gender discrimination is some of the information about diversity in the United States that has helped me better understand and relate to others in ways that I may not have before taking this course. Seeing white people in my community is the norm for me. I live in a fairly large city that has a wide variety of races, culture, and heritage, but Whites make up 90% of the population here, while the rest of the population is a mixer of Asian American, African American, Native Americans, Portuguese and Hispanics. I have been in contact with people that think race, heritage, and culture are factors that do not affect communities, but racism, discrimination, and stereotyping of individuals is very prevalent throughout most communities, even mine. Growing up in my somewhat sheltered home community and then living in other areas of the United States I have learned over time that racism, discrimination, and stereotyping is practiced by all races. Most people may not even realize they are performing these behaviors when they are occurring. This can be seen in schools across America daily. When I was in high school there were different groups of people that only hung out with each other. Depending on how a person dressed, what race the person was, or what his or her grades were they were labeled and put into a specific group. No one dared try mingling with a group he or she did not belong to with fear of being humiliated. To prevent discrimination all clubs in school were open for all students to join. However, there was only 1.5% Black students in the entire

What has helped me better understand or relate to others in ways that I may have not in the past was probably during a crucial time in America, and that was 9/11. Many people had a hard time liking Muslims and I didn’t quite understand. I gradually figured out that because some Muslims are bad doesn’t mean that all Muslims are bad. I have grown a respect for Muslims and for other races. As an African American, I have not learned anything new about my family or our culture. What I have realized is that I hear about African American leaders, and people who have stood up for their race. I feel honored at times to be who I am, I don’t neglect my race at all, and I embrace it.…

Diversity can be such an interesting topic. When one mentions diversity several things come to mind and most often the first thing that comes to mind is the cultural diversity of The United States. To gain a better understanding of different cultures around the World, a person could spend their life traveling the globe or even better yet they could sit back and take in the daily occurrences around them. It is hard to find a country more culturally diverse than our own and yet we fail to see it. There are several reasons that we fail to see this diversity, whether it be a lack of understanding or just a lack of willingness to understand. For a country that is called “the melting pot of the world”, we certainly still have a prevalent degree of prejudice and discrimination. Some would call it a lack of insight and willingness to grow; I prefer to call it ignorance and fear, fear of differences and change.…

To begin my personal informative essay on diversity in the United States, I would like to point out what information has had the most influence on how I better understand and relate to others different from how I did in the past. I do not feel as though this class taught me any more than I already know about other races and ethnicities, in terms of, how their ancestors came to America, or what hardships particular racial or ethnical groups have grown through in the group’s history in the United States. What I do feel like this class has done for me is, put into prospective of how often and frequent prejudice and discrimination is still today.…

While I have always believed myself to be reasonably educated about racial diversity, and non-prejudice against those who come from different ethnic backgrounds than my own, this course has taught me that there is much more to the history and reality of Americas struggle to overcome the all too real problem that is prejudice and discrimination. I have learned much about my own background and history that I was not previously aware of as well.…
