Level 4 Theory Assessment Four: Establishing the Ground Rules.
A starting point for creating an effect learning environment for each set of students/learners the teacher should facilitate the setting of ground rules. By analysing the different methods and techniques available for this process the teacher can facilitate the groups’ ground rule setting based on individual needs. And it is in this context that the teacher should create a portfolio of different ways in which to establish ground rules that will underpin the importance of behaviour and respect for others while participating in the learning process.
The basis on which we place ground rules will depend on the group to which they apply. For many youth groups’ ground rules are used as a basis by which we establish a sense of fairness and responsibility amongst students in relation to their own comfort and that of other students in the classroom and during activities. Frank (2004) suggests that it is the role of the teacher to provide experiences that help the students to get to know each other, allow them to offer their hopes and expectations for the class as a basis to establish the Ground Rules. While Gravells (2010) main method is to prepare two lists; one: what I would expect from my students and a second: what they would expect from me. She strongly believes that dictatorial attitude for setting boundaries should not be adopted by a teacher.
By using techniques that establish ground rules based on mutual agreement, discussions, reflecting each student's opinion and negotiating. This encourages students to take part in making the rules; it provides a foundation from where agreed ground rules are more likely to be obeyed.
