Diversity can be defined in various ways. According to the University of Tennessee Libraries Diversity Committee Department, diversity is a commitment in recognizing and appreciating the variety of characteristics that make individuals special in an environment that promotes and celebrates an individual achievement. This basically means understanding each individual is unique, and recognizing each person’s differences in areas such as race, ethnicity, gender, religious and political beliefs. Diversity is important as it is about understanding each other to move beyond simple tolerance, embracing and celebrating the diversity contained in each individual. Multiculturalism is very well known in Malaysia since the very beginning of its history. The purity of the multicultural differences is what makes Malaysia a great country. Despite the differences in culture and races, the citizens of Malaysia manage to live in peace and harmony as one. Diversity in Malaysia has been one of the biggest assets of the country that should be practiced, preserved and safeguarded to bind Malaysians together. The big question is how does Malaysia manage its diversity? To me, the concept of diversity encompasses acceptance, fairness and equality. Let’s start off with fairness of election, for a clearer and more transparent system in conjunction of the upcoming elections. Furthermore, equality before the law and protection of the law to all the citizens and not only a specific ethnic group. This helps in uniting the people and the nation through the federal constitution. In order words, treat people equally. Education does also play a role in enhancing the unity in diversity. It is an important step in teaching children from young to be comfortable with their cultural background and respect others by working with different ethnic and background.
