Choose one (1) of the following four essay options and write a 3-4 page paper. 1. Realist theatre, as seen in A Doll’s House, and theatre of the absurd, as seen in Endgame, are both types of theatre wherein the form of the drama itself contributes to the content of the play; or, to put it in the famous words of Marshall McLuhan, “the medium is the message” (1964). Sets, setting, plot, structure, characters, costumes, and intended effect on the audience, in both A Doll’s House and Endgame, assume and reflect particular world views or understandings of meaning in the world. For your essay do one (1) of the following:

1.a). Discuss A Doll House as an example of realistic theatre.

1.b). Discuss Endgame as an example of theatre of the absurd.

2. a). Does Nora make the right decision when she leaves Torvald in Ibsen’s A Doll House? Write a narrative in the first person (that is, using “I,” in Nora’s voice) justifying herself. Construct this narrative as a letter from Nora to either Torvald, Christine, or Dr. Rank, using what you know about Nora, these characters, their actions, and their relationships with each other from the play to make the letter credible and convincing.

Or,

b). Write a letter from Torvald to Nora convincing her to come back to their home. Again, you must consider the relationship between Nora and Torvald and all that has happened between them in the play, as well as any relevant actions and relationships between them and other characters, in order to construct a convincing and credible letter.
