In Shakespeare’s “Romeo and Juliet” a section of themes are explored in order to suggest certain thought about the story and characters. These themes are significant, because modern day audience can still interact to these themes as they are still elevate. Theme like love and hate, violence and conflict are explored and help attract audience. Conflicts are explored and help captivate audiences. The use of Shakespeare’s language also helps to facilitate these themes.

Love and hate is a powerful force for character’s motivation in the play. Romeo and Juliet’s love for each other is what leads them to defy their families and get married. Shakespeare’s use of emotive language,”Deny thy father and refuse thy name or if thou wilt not be but sworn by love and I will no longer be Capulet” exhibit just how powerful there love is. However hate is also a powerful driving force for the actions of character in the play. The hate between their two families Montague’s and Capulets leads their children’s death. Shakespeare’s use of this imagery “TYBALT Fetch me my rapier, boy. What dare the slave come hither, cover'd with an antic face to fleer and scorn at our solemnity? Now, by the stock and honour of my kin, to strike him dead, I hold it not a sin.” emphasise that there is the hate relationship between the two families Capulet’s and Montague’s Therefore we can see how hate is another driving force for character and many audience would relate this because it is explored commonly in modern days.

Violence is another powerful force for character’s motivation in the play. Shakespeare uses fantastic visions of violence in the story. The image of violence being so unfair exists prominently in the deaths of so many of the cast.  We saw the two obvious images of the tragic death brought on by violence, in the two lovers Romeo and Juliet.  Their young, pure lives are brought to a despicable end through the violence around them.
