To show patriotism for one’s country means to give devoted love, support, and defense to one’s country. It means to have a national loyalty. As U.S. citizens it is our duty to stand by our country through thick and thin. Right now our country is in a time of need, and our economy is suffering. We should respect and support President Obama whether we like him or not. Going against him is only making matters worse, and dividing our nation. Our nation was founded upon certain principles, but lately we seem to have strayed away from them, showing a decline in our patriotism. In the news there have been circulating rumors claiming that Obama in not a fit president because he is not a true American citizen. However, it is a known fact that President Obama was born in Hawaii. Last time I checked Hawaii is one of our 50 states here in the U.S.A. During the late 1800s and the early 1900s European nations wanted to expand and conquer other countries. They wanted to expand economy, get raw materials, and make them more powerful than other countries. The Europeans nations involved in colonizing these countries were Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Japan. The mind set of these nations was like the thinking of Darwin’s theory of natural selection and survival of the fittest. These nations thought they were the strongest nation which brought along the thought of social Darwinism.…

In times of war, such as these, the importance for everyone to know where they stand on the idea of patriotism so they can voice or enact their opinion to the government and the people around them in a more clear and fair fashion is multiplied. The idea of patriotism can often be an obscure one, and during times of heightened security patriotism is a more spoken upon subject. Discussing the many different views of what patriotism means is a key step in better defining patriotism for all people. Barbara Kingsolver says in her article, "My patriotic duty is to recapture my flag from the men now waving it in the name of jingoism and censorship" (Pg. 2). What she means by this is that the idea of patriotism is being morphed into something it is not. She…

Franklin D. Roosevelt explained the freedom of America best when he simply stated, “The winds that blow through the wide sky in these mountains, the winds that sweep from Canada to Mexico, from the Pacific to the Atlantic-have always blown on free men.” Patriotism does not mean you always agree with the decisions or the choices your government makes. In the words of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, “Patriotism means unqualified and unwavering love for the nation.” Patriotism is thinking that your country is the best place to live, through the good times and the bad.…

To me patriotism means not only to fight for the freedom of our country, but the freedom of mankind. Remember back to when the slaves were treated like a rock. Forced to work in the plantations under the blazing sun. Abraham Lincoln brought the freedom the slaves needed. It was true that you could take money off the slave’s labor, but Abraham made sure that they were freed. This shows us what patriotism looks like.…

The Super Bowl is one of the most watched and publicized games in all of sports. This past February, 111 million people worldwide watched the Patriots defeat the Falcons in overtime. In past ten championship games, the Patriots have appeared four times and won two. Out of every team in the National Football League (NFL), the Patriots have played in the big game nine times and won five. In contrast, the Browns have never won or been to a Super Bowl. While the Patriots became champions once again this past football season, the Cleveland Browns had the worst record in the NFL. Patriotism to me, along with many others, means of course to have love for our homeland, our country, to support, serve and defend, to be inspired by, to change for the better and to care deeply for fellow Americans. After September 11th, a lot of people showed their love for this country by doing things like standing in line to donate blood, registering with the army, or even as little as wearing the American colors. Patriots support the countries authorities, laws, and interest. However this does not mean that true Americans should agree with whatever the President of the United States has to say and be blinded by what’s really going on in America. One of the biggest issues today is that people feel like the President has used patriotism with the American people to start a war with other countries. New posters in store windows along with billboards posted along the roads encourage the American people to become one and to show their love for their country. I believe that true patriotism doesn’t have to be encouraged but is something that we feel 24 hours a day, seven days a week, all year long. Patriotism is to be proud of where you are from, and to love everyone around you weither they are natives of that country or not. Patriotism is not to have hate for anyone that’s foreign, or to think your country is better or strong then others for no reason.…

As you are reading this paper, you might think that patriotism in America is displayed when citizens join the military in order to defend their nation. It is quite easy to feel a sense of patriotism when serving in the military in defense of the nation. But, Americans that do not serve in the military, are no less patriotic?
