ANT 250-01 Ecology of Mind

The five essential elements of life are earth, water, fire, air, and space. These elements are important in the Gabra finding finn in an ecosystem. According to the Gabra, the animals of the tribe are the sole seekers of finn, and unless the animals find it, the environment is not good for the tribe. When the animals show the Gabra finn, the women work very hard to set up the camps for the people. The Gabra have a very primal way of thinking, and they believe that they are incarnated from stones, dirt, and elements of that sort. The community always gathers at the well; it is where the people take their animals to drink. According to the Gabra, “things are always changing” and the people are meant to adapt to the changes, not adapt the Earth for their needs.

Heather Apple is a woman from Canada who has developed a passion for gardening, and through that passion, she has started a foundation for seed saving. She explains seed saving as “growing out” a particular endangered species of plants and selling the seeds produced to people in order to protect the species. It is a growing foundation and it is very helpful in protecting species from becoming extinct. Heather has more and more members in her foundation each day, and at the rate it is growing, they will be able to save possibly hundreds of species of plants.

The Makuna Indians are a sparse group of people in South America, who pray to the spirits to give them food, and give thanks when any animal gives its life for the good of the tribe. Among the Makuna, everything is taught to the children by the elders through stories. One story that is always told to the children is that they should never kill the fish where they spawn, or they will be “poisoned.” This story explains to children that if they kill the fish before they are able to lay their eggs, the Makuna Indians will have no fish left to eat.
