Avoiding plagiarism is an issue that both students and teachers have been concerned with for centuries. The article by Burkill & Abbey discusses Plagiarism and offers suggestions on how it can be avoided. The introduction advises students attending a new program or college to familiarize themselves with the academic policies and procedures of the institution. The article refers to these policies as “conventions” and “regulations” which dictate the student’s academic life. This will allow the student to be confident in their future assignments. The fact remains that this can sometimes be a daunting task; however, Burkill, Abbey make some reassurances, stating there are many resources for assistance including: student handbooks, counselors, and other students. Most students do follow the policies and regulations; there are still a large number of students who have problems with types of academic dishonesty including plagiarism. Most students who commit the offence of plagiarism intend to do so, but there is also a growing number who plagiarize other peoples work unknowingly. In the 2009 Collins English Complete & Unabridged Dictionary, plagiarism is defined as the "use or close imitation of the language and thoughts of another author and the representation of them as one's own original work”, this definition is in some ways confusing. When researching a topic, you will first gather as much information on that topic as possible by reading various works in journals, books, and other research papers. In doing so the information you have obtained is coming from another persons work. If you are unfamiliar with the information you have learned from your research than any ideas or thoughts about that information you put on paper has come from another source or person other than your own.
