ANIMAL EXPERIMENTATION

There has been a controversy between animal rights supporters and scientists about whether it is right to use animals in experimental research. Also, it is very debatable whether using animals for such research results in finding a cure for diseases. If there are no other alternatives, and if it is possible that this will contribute to science, animals may be used for experimental research.

Although the animal rights activists claim that people and animals are equal and thus they should be treated equally, people and animals cannot be seen equal, and therefore the death of an animal cannot be the same thing as the death of a person. For that reason, causing animals to die for science, for the sake of saving human lives, may be considered ethical to some extent if it will contribute to the advancement of science and will be to the benefit of humanity in general; Obviously, the death of a mouse is preferable than the death of a sick child.

Furthermore, animal rights supporters label scientists as ‘cruel’ for causing animals to die in medical experiments. While they do not oppose the people, mostly farmers, who kill animals for food even though they know that 99% of animals deaths is caused by farmers while only a small percentage, less than 2% is caused by scientists; furthermore, Animal rights defenders claim that it will make no good to use animals in experiments because they are too different to be compared to people. Some of them even assert that it is better to use people directly as they think that the results of experiments on animals cannot be valid and reliable as long as the same observation has not been done on man also. However, these people cannot foresee the disastrous results of such a practice. Many people are likely to die until a healthy result is obtained,.

People and animals may not be the same, but to some degree there are similarities which can at least give scientists an idea about their experiments. From

`”God loved the birds and invented trees. Man loved the birds and invented cages” (Deval, Jacques). There are many things wrong about animal research, and I think that a lot of it is wrong. Animal testing is wrong because it harms animals, animals’ rights are violated in tests, it is expensive, there are better alternatives, and the results of these tests aren’t always accurate or reliable.…

Comparing to those poor animals, it seems like that human's lives are much more important. Jane had asked in this article"If you had to choose between saving a very cute dog or my equally cute, blond daughter, whose life would you choose?"pg.84. No doubt that one would choose little girl's life rather than that dog. This is not a difficult choice. However, just like what Jane said "It is not that I do not love animals, it is just that I love Claire more"pg.84. In the depth of our heart, we do think that ours lives are worthier than any other species. Therefor, some medical researchers test on animals before they use on human.…

In addition with no enforced laws, animals produce different results than humans. For instance, lead in w/transition “Even within the same species, similar disparities can be found among different sexes, breeds, age and weight ranges, and ethnic backgrounds” (“Results from Research…” n.pag.) The research people are doing will have an unlikely result in succeeding and or curing because they do not consider different characteristics of animals. Even with animals of the same species, there is no guarantee that all outcomes will be the same. Examine results show, “Animal studies are flawed by design. In addition to the fact that animals make poor surrogates for humans, the design of animal experiments is often inherently flawed, making it that much more unlikely that results obtained from such studies will be useful” (“Results from Research…”n.pag) The experiments we use on animals have no impact on human lives because even though animals have a similar body structure, they do not always correspond with the human anatomy. Scientists should put in more consideration with size, shape, skin, and different ways breeds function.…

Animal Experimentation by Peggy J. Parks describes advantages and disadvantages of animal research. This book explains one of the major social justice issue that is becoming controversial these days: Animal Rights. Scientists are trying to find new vaccines and medical products, but you cannot test them on humans right away. We cannot risk human’s life, but can we risk animal’s life? In 2005, the USDA reported that 1,177,566 animals were used in the laboratory, excluding mice, rats, birds, fish, etc. The scientists mostly failed to make new discovery, and even if they did, it was not effective because humans and animals are very different. Animals are also used in education, but some students and parents consider dissection of animals as teaching…

The majority of animals that go through the trials used in research are killed during or after these trials. Many animals suffer during the studies; the lives of animals are routinely sacrificed with sometimes have no gain in research. “Animals do not have the cognitive ability or moral judgment that humans do and because of this they have been treated differently than humans by nearly every culture throughout recorded history. If we granted animals rights, all humans would have to become vegetarians, and hunting would need to be outlawed.” (Machan). Machan clearly has a great expert opinion on the view about animals having no rights. It is true that animals sometimes die during experimentation, but researchers and scientists have to learn by trial and error. Not every single experiment conducted can have a positive or health breaking effect. You have to test every time with every possible angle because you learn more from your errors.…

Every year, there is over two hundred million innocent animals are injured or killed in scientific experiments across the world. Out of these animals, between seventeen and twenty million are used in the United States alone. It’s been known that an animal dies in a laboratory every three seconds. Those in favor of animal experimentation say they’re taking animals’ lives to save humans. But is it really necessary to subject animals to torturous conditions or painful experiments in the name of science? Is it right to destroy and take an animals’ life just by testing shampoos and makeup? Animal experimentation, like many of the issues we face today, is difficult to argue against, and just as hard to support.…

The death of animals due to an experiment gone wrong is similar to a murder of a human who was tested against his will. In human tests, humans are asked to sign up legally for being tested. So in case of any kind of loss, him and his family are compensated. However, animals are never asked for their opinion and don’t sign up legally because they do not have the understanding capabilities of a human. This does not give us the right o use another life for our…

Experiment animals are protective walls of human beings’ health. They are routinely cut open, poisoned and then caged in for weeks, months or even years. Some animals are often given diseases to see whether a new drug will work or whether it has side effects. Some animals are killed by researchers in order to see the degree of damage inside their bodies. And we can often see that baby cats or rabbits being separated from their mothers on TV too. This is not moral. Things can be made clearer by turning it round. If there is a day when all these animals become masters of this planet, and we human beings become “slaves”—the scientific research targets. What would we think about? It is reported that there are 3million animals die annually in scientific researches in UK. The number is about 115 million in America. Statistics show that an animal dies for scientific researches every three seconds. However, the exact number of animals killed in the researches every year is unknown, for researchers or governments never care about these dead, not to mention counting the numbers.…

Animal experimentation is a sensitive topic because it helps find a cure for diseases, but it also kills over a 100 million animals every year. Most of the animals don’t receive any type of anesthesia. I believe that scientists who work on animal experimentation should do something pleasant for the animals and return them to their natural habitats, so they don’t suffer their entire life. I think that the benefits that animal experimentation provides doesn’t justify the fact that humans have to harm…
