“No other Filipino writer has written prose more clear and clean and straight and direct and hard and pure as N.V.M. Gonzalez” writes Arcellana. His prose is a perfect vehicle of thought. A prose where texture has been added to structure and subtlety to strength. A collection of prose with an inner calmness, subtly and warmth but the effect is startling and powerful. Indeed, N.V.M. Gonzalez’s “Children of the Ash-Covered Loam and other stories” is one of the few Filipino stories of real power.…

It is surprising that the author was acknowledged with his writings and not on the bridges and roads that he made. This proves that a person can do best when he or she loves what he does. Although he had always dreamt of being a good story teller just like the hired man who was a suspect on every crime he was paid for, the author still followed the dream of his father for him to become an engineer. During those times, the father’s argument that there is no money on becoming a writer may be true. Nevertheless, the author had done a great story of his past. Together on his experiences was a clear, narrative view of how rich the Philippine culture is. And maybe, if have not been an Engineer, he may not have the good stories to share which he had told in a way that the reader can imagine that he or she is also a part of the story.…

First, being characters of pure fiction, the author’s views, dispositions and attitude towards the characters must be thrown into the analysis. The assumption here is that every word, action or thought expressed by each character hinge on who the author is. Put simply and concisely, character identities are symbiotically attached to the author’s identity. Appropriately, in my personal experience of Literature study in The Ateneo, professors would begin every discussion by first introducing the author so that students would comprehend the maxims behind the story’s plot, setting, style, theme and in this case, character profiles. A corollary to this assumption is that the author’s background (personal history) has an implicit yet profound influence on all aspects of the narrative. An illustration very close to our Filipino roots and sensibility are the works of Jose Rizal – Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. Through acquainting ourselves with Rizal, the maxim of nationalism comes to light, that given the identity of Dr. Jose Rizal, readers realize the implicit heroic propaganda embedded between the lines. They are able to further comprehend why characters were constructed the way they were. Donya Victorina, for instance, is profiled to be a model for colonial mentality in order to awaken the sensibilities of the elite in antagonizing their own native identity.…

Historically, Philippine Literature in English began with the coming of the Americans in 1898. The Filipinos learned another foreign language and were introduced to another alien culture. Used to the “leisurely tempo and ornate phraseology of the Castilian speech”, they had to adapt to a new language that was more or less direct and less florid. Spanish continued to dominate the circle of the elite but in the 30’s, it began to give way to English. At the same time, the vernacular languages continued to be used in the homes even while Tagalog, the language of the capital and the provinces around it, successfully held its own against English and Spanish.…

I think that the purpose of the book really is to show what happened to the Filipino people after all those occupations — the Spanish, American, and the Japanese occupations – how the people had lost their own identity in the process [just like the balete tree nilamon na ng vines yung tree mismo, na-strangle... yung vines yun na ang naging tree pero yung puno mismo, hindi na makita kasi natabunan na]. And how these events brought the worse and the best out of people. And how they were divided by their own steadfast beliefs and their respective conditions and situations in life.…

Nick Joaquin celebrates the main identity of Philippine Literature in English: to use the English language in portraying the country’s cultural heritage. His famous work “May Day Eve” characterizes the cultural roots mirrored through the story’s setting during the Spanish colonization in the Philippines. Well influenced by his background as a writer in the age of American and Japanese revolution; the short story set in three generations from 1847-1890 draw the readers to the highly structural society as told by Don Badoy Montiya and Doña Agueda’s marital life. Philippines, as institutionalized by the Catholic faith, thrives by the patriarchal society and frozen traditions based on Don Badoy and Doña Agueda’s educational background, and embittered married life dictated by their belief in the May day eve ritual. Nick Joaquin’s “May Day Eve” mandates a time-honoured view of the Philippines as a cultural heritage; a comparison and contrast of Pre to Post-war and Spanish colonization.…

The Filipino’s national hero, Jose Rizal, had written two famous novels which are the Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo. The compelling part of these novels compared to the regular novels we have nowadays is all the symbols that depicted the Philippines’ society in Rizal’s time. One of the symbols that he used is his characters. Each character represented a real person in society and through these it can be analyzed if that character represented a social cancer in the society.…
