Belonging is a natural human need. It is also something that we can strive for or feel crippled by. How do the composers show this through their characters, the way they structure texts and the language features they use?

In THE CHINA COIN Allan Baillie uses the characters of Leah and Ke to highlight the two extremes of belonging: that it is a state that we crave and seek, it is also a feeling that has the capacity to hinder our growth to maturity and fulfillment. Here, Baillie structures his work in such a way that Leah, as an outsider, enters China and undergoes a process of change as she seeks a clearer sense of cultural connection. Yet Ke, a student involved in protests against the government, is crippled by his own culture, one where the monolithic Communist Party comes to frustrate his need for change. As the narrative focus of THE CHINA COIN, it is Leah who we follow in her quest for meaning in the land of her ancestors. Yet Baillie ensures that her need to fulfill her father’s dying wish, to find the other half of the coin, is complicated and comes with many obstacles. The first obstacle is Joan, her mother, who is ever fearful of social unrest following her experiences in Malaysia as a young girl. However, it is only when Baillie has Joan hospitalized, following the accident with Heng, that this so-called obstacle is removed. Leah is free to explore the subtleties of Ke’s family and his connection to Turtle Land Village, all so very different to the grim urban centres of Shanghai and especially Chongquing, where Leah fails to establish a connection at all…

    Belonging is an instinctive factor in human nature which is embedded in everyone. The sense of belonging or not belonging can have a significant impact on a person’s life, their personality and their position in society. A person may find a strong sense of belonging through representations of symbolic places, relationships or events. Through these different aspects which create a sense of belonging, a strong individual identity can also be formed. Peter Skrzynecki explores these concepts in his poem “Feliks Skrzynecki” and presents the idea that there does not always have to be a conflict between an individual’s desire to belong and their duty to themselves. In this poem, Skrzynecki demonstrates how Feliks’ bond with his home country of Poland and his desire to continue to belong there, play a defining role in shaping his own individual identity in his new country, Australia. He retained his individual identity throughout the many experiences in his life and it is this strong sense of personal awareness that fuelled the desire to further strengthen his sense of belonging with Poland, as opposed to Australia. Through this motion, Skrzynecki demonstrates how Feliks does not feel obliged to change his identity in order to feel a part of or fit into his new society. He does not have a distinct desire to belong to his new life, rather he chooses to surround himself with what reminds him of Poland – his home country in this new environment, hence eliminating the conflict of the individual’s duty to themselves and their desire to belong. Along with this, Skrzynecki is also able to portray how his father’s behaviour has affected him by making it difficult for Skrzynecki to develop his own sense of belonging in Australia.     In “The China Coin”, Leah gains a new understanding of the society in which she struggles to partake. Leah’s intolerance towards the Chinese culture is presented through her inner monologue “I am being taken to a village so primitive they file their teeth and eat meat raw.” Although she fails to recognise her cultural identity, later “for the first time, Leah was thinking of Joan’s family as her family.” Similarly, Billy Elliot hesitates to enter the boxing hall and discover a new part of his identity. A long-shot showing Billy, swinging the door and being aggressively pushed by another boy, reinforces the idea that he is an outsider in the boxing world.
