Eat Your Enzymes: Bioethical Focus
I will be talking about how manufactures of enzyme supplements should be required to complete controlled medical research studies. If enzyme supplements helps you feel better, you should not be prevented from taking them! If someone chooses enzyme therapy for a serious medical problem and later dies, I do not believe the enzyme therapist and/or manufacturer should be sued for treating this patient. I believe that manufactures of enzyme supplements should be required to complete controlled medical research studies before selling their product! They should be required to do this because there are no studies that support evidence that enzymes can benefit healthy people or prevent disease (Enzyme supplements, 2007). Many people don’t seek traditional medical attention for serious ailments and believe these enzymes will heal them according to manufacturer’s advertisements (Mader, 2011). If enzyme supplements helps you feel better, you should not be prevented from taking them just because they are not traditional medicine. It is your choice if you want to take them or not! Although, I don’t think a person should rely completely on enzyme supplements to cure their ailments. They should also seek professional advice from their doctor first! If someone chooses enzyme therapy for a serious medical problem and later dies, I do not believe the enzyme therapist and/or manufacturer should be sued for treating this patient. I do believe that the enzyme therapist/manufacturer should notify patients that there is no 100% percent guaranteed cure rate, and that traditional medicine doesn’t either (Mader, 2011). A patient who chooses the traditional medicine and later dies, no one is sued! This is why I think enzyme therapists/ manufacturers shouldn’t either! It is a patients choice to choose enzyme therapy!
