The environmental movement is social, political and scientific, and addresses issues regarding conservation of the environment and "green" issues. The movement has roots in the 1800s, when environmental negligence led to increased air and water pollution. It became more widespread and active after World War II. In the United States, the movement has two main dimensions: protection and conservation. Of course we have accomplish technological advacements such as pictures of the Earth taken from outer space and nuclear proliferation that delivered new reason and insights for concern over Earth's unique and small place in the whole universe. Well known leaders from the early environmental movement include John Muir, Gifford Pinchot, and Henry David Thoreau. Environmental damage through radiation, oil spills and pollution escalated during the second half of the 1900s. Public awareness and involvement has continued to increase.
