Environmental Psychology Article Analysis
Personal identification of individuals, places, objects and events help to form attachments between humans; negative or positive experiences during childhood cause individuals to relate strongly to one another or exhibit detachment. Individuals, who take up the mantle of environmentalist, have often suffered environmental degradation as a child; the severity of the loss caused the individual to engage in conservation activities. The opposite is true for those with no childhood exposure to nature; detachment in this case can be reversed when parents nurture the importance of nature in the child (Clayton & Myers, 2009).
An individual can also form an attachment with nature, if an environmental tragedy occurs in their adult years. The impact of a devastating event can cause a lifestyle change that is either in harmony with the environment or in fear of it. The extent in which an individual or group will encompass to understand nature and how to preserve it comes from bonding with the environment early on. Location identity is an important component to understand different problems in nature and then help to improve those situations (Clayton & Myers, 2009). Individuals living in a metropolitan area have a limited knowledge of farms and other rural areas.   The importance of clean water, constant irrigation, healthy soil and reduced amounts of chemical usage help a farm function properly.
However, a farmer petitioning the metropolitan council for funds to create a new irrigation ditch for his crops may encounter a communication barrier.   Location identity is not simply physical it can be economic as well. Education is important when concerning how environmental disasters affect individual’s on a psychological level; however, not many countries have appropriate education opportunities.... [continues]
