Environmental Ethics
Abstract
Environmentalism is a highly ethical, intensely moral and very complicated legal issue among residents in our world today. Public awareness is at its highest level ever. Depletion of our natural resources continues at such a rapid pace that it has affected the ecological balance of ecosystems globally. Actions that are currently being implemented, will, ultimately, determine the survival of planet Earth as we know it.
Environmentalism and Ethics
Since the beginning of time, humanity has co-existed with their environment for survival. Through a delicate and intricate balance of animal, vegetable and mineral, all living things had a consistent supply of air, water and food. Humans, because of their superior intelligence gained the highly desired position of dominance over their immediate surroundings. As such, they began a policy of unintentional destruction of their environment through progress, greed and ignorance.
Needs for food and shelter grew as families began to increase in size and life spans began to increase. Hunting, fishing, farming and raising livestock caused an ever expanding need for more space and food. We call this progress and industrialization. With the new progress came additional needs and adjustments. We learned about trading things like furs and created a series of businesses to support industrialization. More knowledge and growth required even more space. As such, large cities developed which increased the already critical demands on the environment around us.
Suddenly, humanity noticed changes in their environment. Size, quality and quantities of plants, birds, and animals began to diminish. Water began to lack the clear, sparkling quality to which all had grown accustomed. Growing seasons became to be shorter.
