Environmental ethics for the earth

1. Introduction There are many things that we as humans take for granted, many things that we only acknowledge and appreciate once it is too late. Some might think about our health as something we take for granted, but I am particularly thinking about our wonderful, marvellous and serene environment, that no one really thinks of until it becomes too late. We breathe about 18000 and 30000 times a day, and we cannot live without air for more than a few minutes, yet we do not give thought to how vitally important it is for us to have the incredible health to breathe the pure air that we breathe. This is all courtesy of our creator, who intended on this wonderful planet giving us the best resources that human beings and every other living thing needs in order to survive. The fragility of our planet has only in recent years been brought to our attention and imaginations, thinking of how it is suspended in space, nothing above it, nothing under it, seeing our only home in the vast emptiness of our universe and how it has but only a thin layer of the breathable air, causes people to appreciate our precious and fragile world we live in. it also enables people to see the earth as God saw and still see it. In Genesis we read, ‘29 And God said, “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. 30 Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food”; and it was so. 31 Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.’ (Genesis 1:29-31 NKJ) To study the environment and ecology as a Christian is to explore the intricacy of the Lord’s handiwork, to see a glimpse of his heart and mind, and to see how pure and kind our Lord is. The scope of our environment is very complex, yet quite simple in fact. The surroundings of our environment will ultimately affect us as human beings, and destroying it without realising it will have a grave impact on future generations. Ethics and morality has to do with what is right and good, and Christian or Theological ethics includes a reflection of what is right and good, making ethical decisions and performing right actions and deciding to be morally formed as human beings. Environmental ethics thus strives to ensure that Christians act in a moral and ethical way in which the preservation of the earth is concerned. The reason for environmental ethics is due to the factors that are threatening the environment a great deal, like extreme population growth, global warming, depletion of the Ozone layer, air and water pollution, chemical risks, etc. The environment is also majorly effected by the modern miracles of industrialisation and technological advances. Technology and industrialisation have allowed humans...
