Ruiz Food Products, Inc. is the number one producer of frozen Mexican food products in the United States today. The company was founded in 1964 when Luis Ruiz and his son Fred began selling frozen Mexican food products from a small warehouse facility in Tulare, California. Today, the company is located on 43 acres in the heart of the San Joaquin Valley in Dinuba, California. The main plant and headquarters are located in a 300,000 square foot facility, with external locations in Tulare, California and Denison, Texas. After more than 40 years in business, the company continues to prosper under the leadership of Fred’s children, Kim and Bryce. As the third generation of the Ruiz family, they are creating new products and expanding distribution to answer the needs of an expanding market. As this market continues to grow, the research and development team (R&D) at Ruiz Foods will continue to scan the environment to answer the needs of the customer. Food and beverage manufacturers exist in a highly competitive industry. In the 1970’s, Americans spent about one-third of their food dollars away from home. Today away-from-home food spending now accounts for 46% of the food dollar, according to USDA data (Swientek, 1996). Today’s consumers eat when they want, where they want it, and how they want it. The increasing numbers of consumers who purchase food outside of the home are driven by time, or actually a lack thereof. According to research presented by Michael Gorshe of Anderson Consulting, 64% of people hate to shop for food (Swientek, 1996). While visiting the in-store bakery was rated as the most pleasurable shopping experience, leaving the store was rated as the second best experience of the shopping trip.
