Euthanasia or commonly known as assisted suicide and is defined as: an easy, painless death, which was derived from the Greek words Eu Thanatos. There are two main types of euthanasia- passive and active. Passive euthanasia is when s person is taken off of life support and letting them die naturally; while active euthanasia is ending a suffering persons’ life prematurely by helping them die with an overdose of medication (Foley, 2008). Although Euthanasia is neither widely accepted nor legal, it is practiced in America.
Euthanasia has grown in popularity throughout the American population over the years. Terminally ill patients are seeking the right to end their lives with dignity. They want to end their lives without pain and also before all of their resources are drained from care that will not improve their quality of life. Dr. Jack Kevorkian is possibly the nation's biggest advocate of assisted-suicides. According to his claim, he has performed physician-assisted suicide on 130 patients. On Nov. 22, 1998, he delivered a thirteen minute and 36 second tape to 60 minutes; where he injecting potassium chloride into Thomas Youk, who suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) or Lou Gehrig's disease as its widely known (Vatz & Weinberg, 1999). He was sentence with first-degree murder for euthanizing Thomas Youk. The debates are centered on whether a dying patient has the right to die under euthanasia. The two major reasons people are against euthanasia are: 1) religion and 2) moral reasons. Others favor euthanasia because of their compassion and respect for the dying. Most states have not recognized euthanasia. Only three states; Oregon, Washington and Montana recognize the patient’s right to request euthanasia. Many physicians oppose the procedure because they question where they would place the line that separates relief from dying and killing.
